On the 10th anniversary of the Gesellschaft für Designgeschichte e. V. (GfDG / Society for Design History), Die Neue Sammlung is hosting its annual conference. This year’s topic explores “Positions of the New” and coincides with the exhibition Hella Jongerius & Louise Schouwenberg – Beyond the New in Pinakothek der Moderne.

Contributions to the conference explore the standing of the New, straddled as it is between the present – which some have criticized as being over and gone – and the future, while simultaneously seeking to craft a fresh concept of the New. Is the New automatically connected to consumerism or does growth depend on the New? What impact should the New have and how much of the old is reflected in the New? To what extent has the technological and economic concept of innovation replaced the creativity of the avant-garde? In what contexts is the New to be found in contemporary design? Can design shake off the paradigm of the New or is it essential to design? The changing positions of the New spawn many questions, which will be discussed at the conference.

Founded in February 2008 the Gesellschaft für Designgeschichte e. V. (GfDG) seeks to promote the study of the history of design, but also to network historical research and practice with one another.
