In a comprehensive exhibition Die Neue Sammlung in cooperation with Neues Museum in Nuremberg is showing early and recent works by Alessandro Mendini. The presentation explores the artistic roots and methodical approaches evidenced in the design world of the man from Milan. And the unconventional architect and designer is revealed to be a designer of great consistency.
Amongst Italian designers Mendini was, and is the provocative devil of industrial design. He constantly questions the positions of the traditional, he is an iconoclast, an arsonist against the force of habit. On the architectural stage of the central exhibition room Mendini, inspired by its cubist austerity and compactness creates an exhibition landscape comprising several islands. These islands, standing areas and pedestals for the exhibits, cite on a large scale elements from Mendini’s design idiom, the so-called stilemi. Over 80 exhibits allow the visitor to delve into a microcosm, which startles, surprises and amazes through the universality and poetry, colored opulence and exotic nature of the objects. Mendini creates a design chamber of curiosities, brimming with feeling and appealing to the senses.
