Future Talks 009
October 22/23, 2009

The Conservation Department of Die Neue Sammlung is pleased to announce the international conference FUTURE TALKS 009: The Conservation of Modern Materials in Applied Arts and Design.
The conference highlights the state-of-the-art of scientific research in the conservation of modern materials – Its major focus being the restoration of design objects, an issue rather neglected until now. During the two day conference 19 experts from all over the world will present their experiences and knowledges in this field. A publication is planned.
The conference takes place October 2009, 22 – 23 at the Pinakothek of Modern in Munich, Germany. The conference is staged by Die Neue Sammlung – The International Design Museum Munich.
With more than 150 participants from all over the world we are looking forward to an interesting and inspiring conference.
The conference is organised by the Conservation Department of Die Neue Sammlung – The International Design Museum Munich.
Die Neue Sammlung houses one of the world’s largest and most important collections of industrial design. New technologies and materials developed in the 20th century are characterising this large collection of design objects, attesting in particular to the use of plastics. However, unlike most traditional materials plastics are subject to a dynamic aging process and often bear irreversible traces of degradation after a relatively short period of time. Corresponding types of damage can hardly be reconciled with the designer’s original intentions and are often problematic in terms of conservation. The Conservation Department of Die Neue Sammlung has for years focused on the conservation of degraded modern materials.
Through the research into the deterioration and preservation of the collections, the development of new conservation processes and the knowledge of original technology, the Conservation Department has become an important center for the conservation and the maintenance of design. The Conservation Department plays an active role in sharing knowledge and takes part in national and international research projects in the field of conservation.
