Pinakothek der Moderne, designed by Stefan Braunfels, is home to one of the largest collections of modern and contemporary art, architecture, and design in Europe. Beneath its roof it houses four completely independent museums: The Munich Technical University’s Architecture Museum, Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum, Die Sammlung Moderne Kunst der Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen and Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München. The total area of some 12,000 sq.m. offers visitors a panoramic view of the arts of the 20th and 21st centuries. The unique diversity of the exhibitions is accompanied by a rich and inspiring program of events and art education. Visitors encounter a feast for the eyes and the mind, a place of encounters, discoveries and exploration – in the midst of Munich’s art complex.
Pinakothek der Moderne is a store for 20th and 21st century art and design – and their memory, too. It also serves as a forum for debate on present-day issues and currents. The foundations are laid by the four museums that have grown through time, are constantly being expanded on, and digitally catalogued. Pinakothek der Moderne encourages active participation, seeking to be stimulating, complex and open.
The building’s open and spacious structure makes a decisive contribution to the realization of the transdisciplinary concept. All guided tours start in the large rotunda with its impressive, 25-meter-high glass dome.
Alongside the two permanent presentations by the Sammlung Moderne Kunst on the upper floor and that by Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum in the basement, the ground floor of Pinakothek der Moderne is used to stage temporary exhibitions. Two spaces are reserved for shows by the Architecture Museum and Graphische Sammlung respectively. Two additional exhibition halls are used by all four collections.
