Alessandro Mendini – Cabinet of Curiosities Design
About the Exhibition
In a major exhibition, Die Neue Sammlung, in cooperation with the Neues Museum Nürnberg, presents early and new works by Alessandro Mendini and explores the artistic roots and methodical approaches in the Milanese designer’s cosmos. The unconventional architect and designer shows himself to be a designer of great consistency.
Among established Italian designers, Mendini was and is the provocateur of industrial design. He constantly questions the positions of the traditional, he is an iconoclast, an arsonist against the power of habit. On the architectural stage of the central exhibition hall, Mendini stages an exhibition landscape consisting of several islands, inspired by its cubic austerity and unity.
These islands – standing areas and pedestals for the exhibits – quote large-format design elements from Mendini’s design alphabet, the so-called Stilemi. Over 80 exhibits allow visitors to immerse themselves in a microcosm that amazes, surprises and astonishes through the universality and poetry as well as the colorful opulence and exoticism of the objects. Mendini creates a design cabinet of curiosities, witty, subtle and highly sensual.
